David Katz, Reaching Higher, Twenty-Two Gallery

David Katz, Reaching Higher, Ode to Magritte, oil on canvas, 39″ x 58″ Twenty-Two Gallery, 236 South 22nd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19146

“Limitless, colorful and musical interpretative art that is collage based. Each painting is made on my own hand made stretchers. I paint to music and really love the challenge of painting each new collage inspired painting. I paint with passion.I have a goal. It is that the viewer feel the music and feel the life in each piece. If that happens then I have succeeded.”  David Katz

Ode to Magritte has been on my mind for a couple of weeks, the cyclops blueberry eye like a Dada chakra. The bowler hat describes Magritte’s art in a few deft lines, the feeling of felt, the  swagger of a character from another time and space. Magritte painted Son of Man as a self portrait, the bowler and green apple obscuring his face. Katz’s painting uses the painting vocabulary of Magritte but amps up the color and edits the story to essential elements. The artist creates collages then recreates the image as paintings. This oblique narrative leads to compositions that are strangely complex and engaging, Ode to Magritte has turned my third eye into a blueberry for a while, expressing truth through symbols, color and line.
