Since 1897, The Plastic Club has been devoted to the promotion and preservation of the visual (plastic) arts in Philadelphia. The busy gallery schedule offers several annual exhibitions for members and non-members, as well as invited artists in solo and group exhibitions. Members include well-known Philadelphia artists.
The name ” Plastic Club,” suggested by Blanche Dillaye, referred to any work of art unfinished, or in a “plastic” state. The term also refers to the changing and tactile sense of painting and sculpture. – The Plastic Club website
Sheila Fox, My Fear is a Sacred Portal, acrylic, New Members 2013, The Plastic Club
Recently DoN was posed with two questions about art that were hard to answer – what’s the next big thing? And who’s your favorite artist?
“The next big thing is the growth of the art community in Philadelphia. The Plastic Club provides the opportunity for artist’s, either emerging or established, to exhibit and be in the company of like minded people. The arts is one of Philadelphia’s biggest industries, the creative community in Philly is wide and diverse. Lots of people would like to get their arms around this demographic since it’s worth so much money, The Plastic Club isn’t interested in making money just providing a safe space to show and grow as an artist.”
Frank P. Rausch, Autumn on the Creek, New Members 2013, The Plastic Club
David Katz, Tailored Butterfly, oil, Popo Flanigan, Albigotta Gulf Fluke, acrylic, New Members 2013, The Plastic Club
DoN doesn’t have a favorite artist. There are many influencers and styles that are inspirational but art is a really big world filled with styles, personalities, techniques and conceptions that narrowing it down to one is difficult. A photograph of Marcel DuChamp is next to DoN‘s bed, though.
David Katz, Buddies, oil, New Members 2013, The Plastic Club
Popo Flanigan, Floundering, acrylic, New Members 2013, The Plastic Club
Robert Allen, Primal Scream, ballpoint pen, New Members 2013, The Plastic Club
One thing that is really exciting about art today is seeing new work that creates an elevation of meager materials to a higher value as in Robert Allen‘s drawing, Primal Scream.
Ed Snyder, Vibrating Angels, digital print, New Members 2013, The Plastic Club
Ed Snyder is a great photographer, entrepreneur, author, blogger and member of The Photographic Society of Philadelphia. The new direction he has taken in his art using digital manipulation of his photographs is representative of the desire to continue growing as an artist. The Plastic Club welcomes and encourages all forms of art creating a truly vibrant model of an artist collective. Ed Snyder‘s book, Digital Photography for the Impatient, is for sale in the sidebar.
Sanny Williams, Rake, mixed media, New Members 2013, The Plastic Club
It’s not embroidery or crochet, it’s marker and mixed media. Love it.
Sam Hung, Sal, mixed media, Aimee Goldsmith, Creature, plaster with burlap, Hollow Man, plaster/wire/clay, New Members 2013, The Plastic Club
This little table in the Tea Room Gallery has been the scene of many lovely tableau’s combining sculpture and 2D work. Here the striking white busts by Aimee Goldsmith paired with Sam Hung‘s painting creates a vibe of contemporary sensibility for which the Plastic Club is known.

One of the cool things about writing this blog is selecting artwork to show. At The Plastic Club the art is all numbered so it’s always a surprise when DoN selects multiple works by the same artist from a large pool of work, it’s kind of meta-magical. It’s not favoritism but Sam Hung’s work begins and ends this post. The next show at The Plastic Club is called the Home and History show, here’s the link to the prospectus.
