America’s Oldest Continuing Artist Organization

On November 20, 1860, six “Bohemian” students from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, George F. Bensell and his brother, Edmund B. Bensell, Edward J. McIlhenny, Henry C. Bispham, John L. Gihon, and Robert Wylie met at 125 South 11th Street to form a “sketching club.” They sought illustration and design opportunities not available at the Academy. Within months, other talented artists were added to the membership, including Stephen J. Ferris, a celebrated etcher and Thomas Moran, the great landscape artist. – Philadelphia Sketch Club website

The Annual Domenic DiStefano Works on Paper Exhibition 2013 includes over one hundred works by Philadelphia regional artists, the exhibit includes paintings, drawings, prints, collage of all types and styles. The juried show is in the gallery/studio on the second floor of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, America’s oldest artist run gallery on Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Artists, Camac Street. Being part of the art club means you take part in the artistic heritage and history of Philadelphia.

“As the years passed, the roll call of distinguished artists, past and present, continued to grow. Today this list includes names as widely known as illustrators A.B. Frost, N.C. Wyeth, Howard Chandler Christy, Henry Pitz, and Lyle Justis; cartoonists Hugh Hutton and Peter Boyle; painters Walter Baum, Edward Redfield, Hugh Breckenridge, Fred Wagner, Carl Weber, and Daniel Garber; etchers Benton Spruance, Stephen Parrish, and Robert Shaw; watercolorists Frank English, John Dull, Ranulph Bye, Domenic DiStefano, and Vincent Ceglia; and sculptors Charles Grafly, R. Tait McKenzie, Howard Roberts, and Ronald Spicer.” – Philadelphia Sketch Club website

Viewing the work of friends of DoN in the expansive exhibition with the level of accomplishments technically, personally and artistically, exhibited in the show demonstrates that Philadelphia is a world class regional arts center and we’re part of it, making it happen.

Hannah Aufschauer‘s lithograph of her dog Bogie has a casual, in the moment composition but it’s a freaking lithograph. Susan BarnesChristmas Table won an award, she paints every day and wins awards frequently. Ed Bronstein is the the top artist to come up in Google for the terms Philadelphia Landscape Painter. History is still being made at the Philadelphia Sketch Club in this important art show. Philadelphia Sketch Club‘s Annual Domenic DiStefano Works on Paper Exhibition 2013 offers a great opportunity to see many examples of contemporary art by accomplished local artists

John Styner has two pieces in the show demonstrating that digital imaging is on par with traditional media. But the artist is an accomplished graphic designer, the computer is an additional tool not his exclusive media. The digital prints are very contemporary even though the composition reads like a hip abstract beatnik vibe that resonates with the history of the club.

Tom Mix Popcorn Box proves that pop art is alive and well in 2013. The exquisitely rendered paper box, casually placed on the fireplace mantle, made all who saw it do a double-take. Like – of all the nerve! Then – oh, it’s part of the art. Cool.

Noel G. MilesPhiladelphia Museum of Art, won an award, the composition, color, concept and presentation exemplifying the level of skill present in the show. The painting represents the affection the city has towards The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the close ties the club shares with the arts community at large.

DoN again picked two favorites by the same artist to share in this blog. Jennifer Cadoffs drawings are divine. The simple action drawings, demonstrating human concentration and meditation, are minimalistic yet information rich and absorbing. Art should make you stop and think a moment, the power of the line on paper to share ideas, emotions and stories is so important in the modern age.

Gallery hours: Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 1 PM to 5 PM.
